Vigna radiata (mung bean, green gram) is a warm-season annual pulse domesticated in South Asia from the wild V. radiata var. sublobata; it later spread widely across East and Southeast Asia with cultivation attested for millennia. Grown for whole seed, split dal, sprouts, and starch (cellophane noodles), it provides ~20–25% protein and fits short-season rotations (≈60–90 days) while contributing biological nitrogen fixation. Agronomically it shows good drought and heat tolerance but is sensitive to waterlogging; key constraints include yellow mosaic disease and bruchid damage. Typical farm yields are ~0.6–1.2 t ha−1 under rainfed conditions, with improved management/varieties reaching ~1.5–2.5 t ha−1.
